The gallowglass or galloglass – from Irish: gallóglaigh (plural), gallóglach (singular) – were an elite class of mercenary warrior who came from Norse-Gaelic clans in the Hebrides and Highlands of Scotland between the mid 13th century and late 16th century. As Scots, they were Gaels and shared a common origin and heritage with the Irish, but as they had intermarried with the 10th century Norse settlers of western Scotland, the Irish called them Gall Gaeil ("foreign Gaels").

They were the mainstay of Scottish and Irish warfare before the advent of gunpowder, and depended upon seasonal service with Irish chieftains. A military leader would often choose a gallowglass to serve as his personal aide and bodyguard because, as a foreigner, the gallowglass would be less subject to local feuds and influences.

Though the Gallowglass were abolished as military units, their Clan names endure to this day - often concentrated in areas where their ancestors were settled in the service of Irish lordships. At dusk on a summer’s evening in the year 795AD, a sinister looking high-prowed ship ploughed into the sands at Lambay Island just north of Howth Head on the east coast of Ireland near Dublin. Immediately from the body of the Longboat, the oarsmen rushed to attack the monastery of Saint Columkill. They slaughtered the monks, plundered the monastery for for all the gold and silver vessels they could find, and then disappeared back into the Irish Sea. The Irish Annalists, referring to the incident, describe the unwelcome arrivals as 'dubh-ghaill'.

This was the beginning of more than two centuries of attack and invasion which had devastating effect on Ireland, and on the Irish monasteries in particular.

Viking (from the Old Norse Vikingr) means 'sea-rover' or 'pirate', and this precisely what these people were. Ethnically, they were Teutons, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian farmers, fisherman and sea-merchants, who were forced onto the open sea in search of a livelihood by over-population and a shortage of arable land at home. From the eighth century, their plundering raids terrorized much of the known world, reaching as far as America, North Africa and Constantinople.

Members of Clan Doyle /Clann O DubhGhaill ('Dubh-Ghaill' ... pronounced 'Du-Gall') take their family surname from the Irish Gaelic words meaning 'Dark/Evil Foreigner'; and this is just what the indigenous Celts called the Danish Vikings who started settling in Ireland and Scotland more than 1,000 years ago.

In Ireland, the annalists distinguished two groups among the raiding Vikings, the Lochlainn, or Norwegians, and the Danair, or Danes, the Norwegians being described as fair, the Danish as dark (because they wore chain-mail armour). Initially, the Norwegians dominated, and their raids were sporadic and unsystematic. From about 830AD, however a new phase of large-scale attacks, involving the use of fleets of long-ships, began, and the Vikings penetrated deep inland though the use of rivers and lakes. Attracted by the wealth of the monasteries and churches they plundered them steadily. From this period date the first Vikings' fortified settlements. In 852AD, the Danes wrested control of one of these settlements, the military and trading post of Dublin, from the Norwegians under their king Olaf (in Irish Amlaoimh), and founded the Danish Kingdom of Dublin which was to last three hundred years, until the coming of the Anglo-Normans.

For the next 100 years, up to the middle of the tenth century, the Vikings consolidated and extended their power though unremitting aggression. From about 950 on, however, the east Clare Gaelic sept of the Dal Cais began its rise to power, capturing first the Kingship of Munster from the Eoganachta and then, with Brian Boru, taking the high-kingship of Ireland from the Ui Neill in 1002AD. Brian fused the disparate Gaelic forces together with some renegade Vikings into a single confederate army, and stopped the combined might of of the Norwegian and Danish forces in the battle of Clontarf on April 23 1014AD, neutralising the power of the Vikings in Ireland permanently.

Although their political power declined after this, as a people the Vikings were soon thoroughly absorbed into the religious and political life of the country, adopting the Irish language and the Irish customs, intermarrying and intermingling.

To them also we owe all of the earliest towns in the country: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Cork and Limerick all began as Viking settlements, and, even after their absorption into the Gaelic culture, the commercial interests of the newcomers kept them centred in these areas.

As early as 851AD one DubhGilla, son of Broder, is mentioned as king of Idrone in County Carlow. From this time onwards, it is an interesting exercise to trace the development of the name in the calendars of Irish records. We instance the following as examples:- O Dowill, Dowyll, O Dowile, O Doule, O Douell, Duggal, McDuggal, McDowell, Dowell, McDowall and Dowall. All are clearly forms of 'dubh-ghaill' mentioned above.

The McDowell family in Ireland are our 'cousins', and are descended from the Danish Vikings who settled in Argyll and the Western Islands of Scotland. Their great ancestor was Somerled (a Viking word meaning “summer warrior”) , he was the master of Argyll (on the west coast of Scotland) and he was killed in battle against the Scots in 1164AD. (Argyll and the Western Isles were not ceded to Scotland by the King of Norway until 1266AD.) A branch of this family settled in Ireland in the AD1240s. Initially they served as 'galloglass' (professional mercenary soldiers) for the O’Conor Clans in the Province of Connacht. For the next 300 years or so, the McDowells are recorded in various ancient Irish records as professional soldiers, serving a number of different Irish Warlords in various parts of Ireland.

The modern English language version of 'Dubh-Ghaill' in Ireland today is 'Doyle', 'O’Doyle' or 'Dowell', 'McDowell', and in Scotland it is 'Dougall' or 'MacDougall' (the modern Scots-English pronunciation is closer to the original Gaelic). In Ulster and Roscommon, these names now exist as 'McDowell' and 'Dowell', and are carried on by the descendants of the original immigrant Irish/Scots/Norse Galloglass mercenaries. A more complete list of surname varients include all the following: Dougall, Dowell, Doyle, O'Doyle, DubhGhaill, MacDowall, MacDowell, McDougal, McDougall, McDoughall, McDowall, McDowel, McDowell.

Many years ago two men wanted to be King of Ulster. But both could not be King.
One man was Dermot. He was tall and thin. He was a good runner and a very good horseman.
The other man was O’Neill. He was short and quite fat. He had a big black beard. He was a very good fighter. He too was a very good horseman.
For years they argued and argued about who was the best man to be King of Ulster.
‘‘My family has lived here for more than a thousand years. You’re the new people,’’ said Dermot. ‘‘It’s our land. I must be King.’’
‘‘No, that’s not right,’’ said O'Neill. ‘‘There are more people on my side. They want me to be King. It’s our land. I must be King.’’
This argument went on for years and years.
Sometimes their people had fights.
One year there was a fight in the north near Ballymena. More than twenty men on each side were killed in the battle.
The next year there was a fight in the south near Downpatrick. In the big battle more than fifty men on each side were killed.
In the third year there was a fight in the east near Bangor. This was the biggest battle; more than one hundred men were killed.
At last the High King of Ireland called Dermot and O’Neill to his castle.
‘‘This fighting can’t continue,’’ said the High King. ‘‘Ulster is a rich land. It has good farms. It is a good place to live. The fighting isn’t good for anyone. You must agree who is going to be King of Ulster.’’
‘‘What do we have to do?’’ asked Dermot and O’Neill.
‘‘You must stop arguing and agree to stop fighting. You must have a test to decide who is going to be King of Ulster,’’ said the High King.
‘‘Let’s have a fight,’’ said Dermot. ‘‘I’m the best fighter in Ulster. I’ll win and I’ll be King of Ulster.’’
‘‘No,’’ said O’Neill. ‘‘I don’t want to fight. I want to have a race. I’m the best runner in Ulster. I’ll win and I’ll be King of Ulster.’’
‘‘No,’’ said the High King of Ireland. ‘‘I don’t want you to fight. I don’t want you to have a race. You must have a test which is fair to both of you.’’
‘‘So what do you want us to do?’’ asked Dermot.
‘‘What sort of test can we have?" asked O'Neill. "We must decide who is going to be King of Ulster.’’
‘‘I want you to have a horse race,’’ said the High King of Ireland. ‘‘You are both good horsemen. A horse race will be a good test for you. The winner will become King of Ulster.’’
So the two men agreed to have a horse race to decide who was going to be the King of Ulster.
‘‘The race will begin at six o’clock tomorrow morning,’’ said the High King. ‘‘You will start here at my castle. Listen carefully. The winner will be the first man to put his hand on Ulster.’’
‘‘I’ll be the winner!’’ said Dermot. ‘‘I’m the best horseman. My hand will touch the land of Ulster first!’’
‘‘No!’’ said O’Neill. ‘‘I’ll be the winner! My horse is the best in Ireland. I’ll be in Ulster first!’’
‘‘The winner will be the first man to get to the river and put his hand on the land of Ulster,’’ said the High King. ‘‘Do you both agree to this test?’’
‘‘I agree,’’ said Dermot.
‘‘I also agree,’’ said O’Neill.
‘‘Good!’’ said the High King. ‘‘Come here to my castle at six o’clock tomorrow morning.’’
Early the next morning the two men got ready for the horse race.
Dermot had a big grey horse.
O’Neill had a big black horse with white spots.
‘‘Ready!’’ shouted the High King.
Dermot’s grey horse nodded his head, ready for the race.
‘‘Steady!’’ shouted the High King.
O’Neill’s horse snorted.
‘‘Go!’’ shouted the High King.
... and off the two horsemen raced!
The two horses and their riders raced away from the High King’s castle. The horses ran and ran, with their riders on their backs.
Dermot on his grey horse ran fast, and he shouted to make his horse run even faster. O’Neill and his horse ran fast, but in silence.
They raced north, away from the High King’s castle.
Lots of people came out from the villages to watch the race.
Sometimes Dermot was in the lead ... and sometimes O’Neill was in the lead.
At Drogheda O’Neill was leading on his black and white horse.
‘‘Who’s going to win?’’ asked the people as Dermot and O’Neill raced past on their horses. ‘‘O’Neill’s horse is winning - but Dermot’s horse is not so tired.’’
At Dundalk Dermot was in the lead on his grey horse.
‘‘Who is going to win?’’ asked the people from Dundalk as Dermot and O’Neill raced past them on their horses. ‘‘Dermot’s horse is winning - but it’s a very close race!’’
The two riders and their horses still had the hardest part of the race. They had to cross the high mountains into Ulster!
The two horsemen were equal as they started to climb the mountain road.
Both horses were snorting and panting as they raced up and up.
At last they reached the top of the hill. There was a narrow gap between two cliffs, with room for only one horse and rider. Dermot reached it first. He was in the lead.
Dermot’s horse was tired - but so was O’Neill’s. The race was very close.
Dermot was in front!
Then they raced down the hill. A minute later O’Neill was in front!
Every minute there was a change and a chance for the other horseman.
The horsemen were not racing for a silver cup or any prize like that. No, they were racing to decide who was going to be King of Ulster! Both riders thought about the great prize they could win. They both shouted loudly to make their horses run even faster.
Then the horsemen saw the river!
The last part of race was on!
The two men and their horses ran faster than ever!
Faster and faster raced the horses!
The two riders shouted louder and louder as they got closer and closer to the deep river!
Dermot got to the river first. He did not stop on the bank. His horse snorted loudly as it jumped into the cold water. The panting horse and its rider started swimming. The water in the river was cold and deep.
O’Neill had a different idea. He stopped and got off his horse. He stood on the bank of the river. He watched Dermot and his horse as they swam across the deep river. Had he lost the test?
O'Neill took his sword in his left hand. He closed his eyes. He lifted his sword high above his head.
He had one chance left!
He held out his right hand and with one great blow he cut it off! The bleeding hand fell to the ground. There was blood everywhere!
Then O’Neill bent down and lifted his bleeding hand high in the air. He ran to the bank and threw it across the river.
The bleeding hand flew through the air.
Which was going to arrive first - the bleeding hand or the panting horse with its tired rider?
Some of O'Neill’s men were standing on the Ulster side.
‘‘We win! We win!’’ they shouted as the bleeding hand of their leader landed on the bank of the river. ‘‘We win! Ulster is ours!’’
And so the story finishes.
Dermot and his men went to live far away in the west.
O'Neill became King of Ulster.

The Ulster Cycle

The Ulster Cycle is a series of medieval Irish heroic legends and sagas which tell the story of the Ulaid, a people that lived in eastern Ulster and Northern Leinster, specifically in the areas of modern day Armagh, Down and Louth. The stories are written in Old English and Middle Irish prose and verse in manuscripts of the12th to 15 centuries although it is thought that some of the events and characters may date back to the 7th century.

As to the historical veracity of the stories, academic opinion is divided. Some believe that the stories are in essence historical while others see the tales as purely mythological. Many of the stories seem reminiscent of Celtic societies such as Gaul and Ancient Britain; druids advise the kings, chariots are used in battle and the custom of preserving the head of slain enemies is in evidence. Yet other scholars dispute this appraisal and claim to note similarities with early medieval Irish society and an undercurrent of influence from classical literature.

The Ulster Cycle features many different stories and characters, perhaps the best known tale being the tragedy of Deirdre. But the most predominant character in the cycle, who also features in Scottish and Manx legends, is the hero Cúchulainn. Possessed of superhuman fighting skills, brought to the fore when his ríastrad, or “battle frenzy” is upon him, Cúchulainn mainly fights against the people of Connacht, led by their queen Medb, her husband Ailill and their ally, an exiled former king of the Ulaid, Fergus mac Róich.

Cúchulainn is of godly and noble stock. His mother is Deichtine, sister of the king of Ulster, Conchobar mac Nessa, and his father is the principal deity in Celtic mythology, Lugh. When he was born he was named Sétanta and, as was the tradition in Celtic society, was fostered out at a young age, being fostered by several of the Ulster nobles who would provide him with different skills. He was brought up in Muirthemne Plain in what is modern day County Louth.
